Ok i've dug out around 200mm of soil and laid down broken half bricks and paving slabs over the top. I was advised a lot of broken hard core would reduce the amount of type 1 I'd eventually require. I'm now getting mixed advice that brick sized H/C is fine before type 1, and then i'm being told that bricks should be smashed into 4 pieces or smaller. Its a double width drive, so i'm going to concrete 2 car-width slabs after hard core/type 1.
I'll possibly re-bar each section in the end also.
