Who was more important in the history of medicine, Vesalius or Harvey?
William Harvey and Andreas Vesalius were both hugely influential medical scientists that lived and worked in the renaissance period. Although Harvey was born about 60 years after Vesalius , they both studied and worked in Padua. Both Harvey and Vesalius made great contributions to medical understanding and development. It is difficult to determine who had made a bigger contribution to medicine, since they worked in different fields.
Harvey, for instance, discovered and proved how the blood circulates around the body, which contradicted Galen?s idea that blood was produced by the liver and burnt up like fuel. His findings were not very influential in his day and his ideas were not fully appreciated, since discovering that the blood circulates instead of being used up had little practical use to doctors at the time. Instead, his works paved the way for modern medical practises like blood transfusions and the discovery of blood types, which are vital for modern surgical procedures.
Vesalius on the other hand, disproved many ideas about the human body which had been accepted as fact. Since he worked on human corpses instead of working on animal dissections like Galen, he could see where Galen had gone wrong, and his description of anatomy gave us the first accurate view of the human body. Thanks to the invention of the printing press , Vesalius published his works in books with amazing pictures and diagrams, which made them valuable not only to medical students , but also to the rich. Before him, Galen?s ideas were simply accepted and never checked, and human dissections were rare because of religious beliefs.
I think that Vesalius was more important, because although Harvey?s discoveries had the biggest effect in the long run, Vesalius dared to challenge Galen?s ideas, which really lead the way for others to do the same. Without him, we could still be living in the medical dark ages, blindly accepting outdated and incorrect information, without even checking the accuracy of it. His ideas didn?t immensely change medical knowledge, but it changed the way people went about obtaining it, and thanks to him, other people could make their discoveries known, even if they contradicted what was accepted in their day.
