Hey Thanks for any advice in advance.
My partner works for a paving company (UK) and has been doing so for the past 6 months. He was introduced to the vacancy through a friend and has been doing 5 days a week 7-5 (sometimes later) ever since. This is where it all gets confusing and wrong. He gets paid only 35 pounds a day for very hard labour which when worked out amounts to only a few pounds an hour. At first he was okay with this as he had been out of work for a year but now he is very angry that they refuse to pay him at least £48 a day which is his minimum wage. There is no contract to employment even though he has asked but until he finds another job he will not quit. I do not believe they are paying his tax either as there is no payslip and they have not asked for the required paperwork. It all seems very wrong to me and unfair. They say because he does not drive he is not 'worth' the £48.
Is there any legal action which can be taken here? I am very concerned about the tax as I no they are not paying it even though they have told him they are. As he has asked for a pay rise he believes they may fire him. We are both very worried as I am a full time college student and do not earn much.
