Please can anyone advise me how to lay a path with loose paving slabs?

Paving driveway - pave your drive or parking lot with blocks or gravel.

I want to take up some paving slabs and re-lay them in a different part of the garden to extend an exisiting path of same-size slabs. The ones I want to re-lay them next to are laid directly onto the ground and have been there for many years. The area I've prepared for the relocated slabs is slightly stony soil. Should I just level it or should I add a layer of sand or something before laying the slabs. And how can I make sure the height will be the same as the existing slabs, do I have to make it slightly higher and allow for it to settle or should it be level from the start.

Also, when I take these slabs up to relocate them, I want to lay turf down in the empty spaces. Obviously the soil is very compressed from where the slabs were. Should I lay the turf directly on to this flattened soil or break it up. And if I loosen it, how can I ensure that the new turf will end up at the same height as the rest of the lawn, because surely the loosened soil will eventually compact down again and lower the height, I dont want to end up with a sunken garden.

Tips on either/both questions will be very much appreciated.
