Hi. I am researching John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester and getting on well with that. I am interested that Vieth says his writing was analytical rather than synthetic but did pave the way for the syntheses of Swift and Pope. The chapter was about the restoration period being an intellectual crossroads with traditional aristocratic values being challenged by new ones. I have understood this to mean Pope and Swift did combine new and old ideas. Is that correct? I want to understand but they are not part of my research and I don't want to veer off track.
