I mean I was there at the weekend for the first time and after all the hype I've heard I wasn't expecting it to be so rough. There were a few nice streets and squares in the city centre near Deansgate but that was it. Everywhere else was mostly just dirty and very run down. The main street down to the student area is almost third world it is so scruffy, and so much litter. In alot of the city centre the paving stones and roads just had huge potholes in them. The local people mostly look very rough and in town I was asked if I could spare some change so many times I had to stop looking at people and go into tunnel vision mode. I was dressed just normally. Is that what they mean by friendly, people coming up to you in the street? I came back to Leeds on Tuesday but I'm still recovering.
