Maybe it's just the gods of heaven, but I'm starting to think every heavenly god is tyrannical. Aside from God/Yahweh and his brutal legacy as a tyrannical dictator in the Bible, let's look at other examples in mythology.
In Greece, the idea is that the gods in heaven (and I'm sure this does not include the chthonic gods) prohibit Man from achieving power and knowledge equal to the divine or the gods. They will strike humans down for trying to best them and beat them to hell and curse if they succeed (case in point, the story of Arachne).
In Hinduism, I've found that the only reason the devas in heaven are just competing with the asuras and can't stand being overthrown, which is why they send varios gods to strike back and take back power. In fact, the only reason they fight demons is if they try to take power or stand in the gods' way (case in point, the story of Ravana). The gods even send Kalki to wipe out everything in the supposed age of ignorance.
In China, they literally have a Jade EMPEROR, and we know what emperors are like. Even the Buddha sent Monkey to hell for 500 years where he suffered in torment, and afterwards the monk he was sent to guard performed the Headache Sutra everytime he went out of line.
In Japan, the gods of heaven pretty much paved over the gods of the earth and forced them to surrender their land.
Hell, in Babylon, Sumeria, and the rest of Mesopotamia, the gods in heaven created Man to be their slaves before they rebelled, and the only one that seems to care about humanity is Ea/Enki.
So in a sense, surely all the gods of heaven are tyrannical. Don't you agree? And I'm pretty sure the chthonic gods of earth and the primal things aren't like them.
